Elon musk recently got together with Jack Ma (Alibaba founder) for an interesting and somewhat horrifying conversation about artificial intelligence (AI). The conversation took place in Shanghai to debate artificial intelligence and what it might mean for humanity.
Elon Musk has a way of being eccentric and ambiguous…if you have ear heard him speak that is. In some of his recent speeches you could sear that he is 100% for artificial intelligence and the merging of man and machine, but he was a bit stand-offish with this particular conversation.
When Ma attempted to dissuade the common fears that people have on artificial intelligence, Musk was quick to let him know that those were some common “last words” uttered about a multitude of various things that have gone horribly wrong.
It was a strong conversation indeed because most of the time you really had no idea which direction they were going in as seen in this exchange:
Elon Musk: What are we supposed to say? Just things about AI perhaps? Yeah. Okay. Let’s see.
Jack Ma: The AI, right? Okay, great.
EM: Actually, I’m told that—does AI mean love? There’s like a name, AI, it sort of sounds a bit like love?
JM: Yeah, AI—I hate the word AI called artificial intelligence. I call it Alibaba intelligence.
EM: Yeah, might end up being true. You never know.
Strange for the founder of Alibaba to liken all of artificial intelligence to his own brand name. Maybe hes trying to get more people on his site? Who knows. Musk then goes on to compare humans to chimps relative to artificial intelligence. This seems like a fitting comparison if AI is going to be vastly superior to humans. But we could argue by what standards they believe artificial intelligence would outweigh humans.
Elon Musk seems to be on the side of caution, but how do we really know that given his previous speeches in favor of artificial intelligence? He repeatedly makes the claim that artificial intelligence will be vastly smarter than humans. How does he know that? He also warns that researchers will make the mistake of thinking that AI will not be as smart as them when it will, in reality, be vastly superior and smarter. It really sounds like he is doing nothing more than propping the whole idea up. \
He goes even further by saying something very cryptic about artificial intelligence: “I hope they’re nice” and “If you cant beat them, join them”
So, this doesn’t seem very ambiguous to me. Musk is telling us that AI will be superior and you will inevitably have to be assimilated to avoid your own destruction. sounds kind of like Terminator, or The Borg. However, this isn’t a Hollywood set. this is reality and Musk has been known for not joking around a lot when it comes to technology. We could very well be on the cusp of something terrible. Something where we can never come back from.
Then, in natural fashion, Elon Musk plugs his own artificial intelligence product. Ding! Ding! Ding! No, he is not against the idea of Artificial Intelligence at all when he plugs his Neuralink technology. If you are not aware of what this is…please do. Its horrifying. NeuraLink is basically a “self-controlled” link between your brain and an inserted robot / artificial intelligence. By its own definition, it turns you into a literal cyborg. Wonderful.
This is just one of those topics that will continue to evolve and there is much more to this if you want to dig on your own. This subject of Artificial Intelligence will become more and more mainstream as we move forward, so knowing the warning signs and where you stand is a good idea to do right now
Until next time….
